The F-Body Mailing List Rules

Last Update: 1-29-02

Click here if you want to unsubscribe from any lists.

These rules generally apply to all lists run from the f-body.org domain, although the Regional Lists are much more relaxed and tolerant than the main lists (third-gen, fourth-gen, blown, autox, y-body).

Before I start, I'd like to offer some general advice. When you subscribe, don't post right away. Lurk for a few days to get a feeling for the types of posts made, who responds to them, and so on. Also, before posting, read the FAQ. This document contains a large amount of information about F-Body cars, and there is a good chance that many of your questions will be answered here.

Posting very basic questions to the list such as, "What is the best cat-back exhaust?", "What is CAGS/How do I disable CAGS?", "Which car is faster, the Camaro or the Trans Am?", etc. will usually upset people, and will generate lots of "Read the FAQ!" responses. These subjects have been debated time and time again, and most of the useful information from these debates are now contained within the FAQ.

MODERATORS. We have implemented the F-Body Moderation Board, which will police the lists to ensure compliance with these rules. Offenders will be notified with a "citation" post sent privately. Normally, this will be a friendly reminder. However, repeat offenders may face more serious actions, up to and including being banned from the lists.

The Rules

  1. No flame wars. If you disagree with someone, say so clearly and politely. There is no need to tell anybody to get bent, or that they're full of crap. Keep your tempers in check. This applies to EVERYBODY. It applies to myself and to EVERYBODY on the else list.

  2. Never post a private Email to the list (any list) without the author's permission. That's all I have to say on this topic.

  3. There are to be NO off-topic posts. If it's not related to F-Bodies, POST IT TO THE [NC] LIST. See the Lists Page for details on how subscribe and unsubscribe from the various lists. This rule does not always apply to the regional lists; the regional lists are intended for local discussions, which can often be non-f-body related.

  4. In accordance with the rule above, NEVER post a Test message to any list other than [NC]. This will result in immediate removal from the list.

  5. JATO and other Urban Legend Stories. NEVER post these to the list, INCLUDING the NC list. Anyone who posts these (even in humorous reference) will very likely be removed. These are stories that have been floating around for years, and we're all sick of hearing about them.

  6. Don't piss off the List Administrator. This is a guaranteed way to get kicked off the lists.

  7. Virus Warnings. NEVER post thes to the list, INCLUDING the NC list. If you have a warning you feel is legit, send it to fadmin@f-body.org and ask for it to be reviewed. If the administrator feels a warning is appropriate, WE will issue the warning. Anyone who posts a virus warning to the list will be banned permanantly without warning.

  8. File Attachments. DO NOT send them to the list. Some Email programs like to attach files with Rich Text Format or HTML code in them to provide features like different font styles, etc. DISABLE this function of your Email program.

  9. HTML. DO NOT use HTML in your messages. NONE. These lists are 100% pure ASCII ONLY.

  10. Spelling and Punctuation. PLEASE try to take the time to ensure that you use proper spelling and punctuation in your posts. I'm not a school teacher or your mother, but I hope you take enough pride in your posts to try to make them readable to others... because in the Cyberspace world of Email, your writing abilities as well as what you say are what leave an impression.

  11. Foul Language. We request that you limit the use of foul language in your posts, though we do not prohibit it. We do, however, prohibit it in Subject Lines. However, feel free to use "legal" variations (e.g. friggin'). Using special characters to mask out certain letters is not acceptable (e.g. "My car got f*cked up!").

  12. WAREZ. There is to be NO discussion of pirating or pirated software on ANY list running on this server. If you wish to participate in this activity, keep it to yourselves. Keep it off the lists or you risk the existence of all the lists. There will be NO warnings for this. Violaters will be immediately and permanently BANNED.

  13. For Sale ads by Listmembers are welcome, but please limit yours posts of them to once a week. Additionally, anybody responding to these posts should do so PRIVATELY.

  14. Posts of Insurance-related issues are to be held on REGIONAL LISTS or the NC list ONLY.

  15. Posts of "Hey, check out my web page!" should be limited to once every OTHER week. If you MUST post more than that, put it on the [NC] list.

  16. Signatures should be limited to EIGHT LINES. This is double the Internet-accepted standard of four lines. If yours is longer, SHORTEN IT. If you are trying to list more than one vehicle, you may use up to TEN LINES, but that is absolutely it. Also, please consider for a moment that including a large signature in each post is not a good idea, especially when these posts go into the Digest; it just adds that much more stuff that Digest readers have to wade through.

  17. Snip Your Posts. When quoting back previous posts, ONLY qote back the part that is necessary. NEVER quote an entire message.

  18. When quoting back previous posts, be certain that people can tell at a glance where the quote ends and your message begins. Don't run your post together with what you've quoted.

  19. When quoting back previous posts, do not quote back that person's signature unless it is relavant to your post.

  20. NEVER post jokes and humor to the main list. That is what the [NC] list is for.

  21. Please refrain posting "Happy (insert holiday here)!" to the main list. This is just as [NC] as anything else. Signing a REAL post with it is fine, but don't start an [NC] thread with a post specifically about it.

  22. The list automatically inserts the [3], [4], [NC] and other tags in the subject lines as appropriate. You don't need to do this yourself. However, it is recommended that you add [blown] or similar tags to your posts to identify if you are posting about forced-induction related topics.

  23. Subject lines: EDIT THEM. If a thread changes, take the initiative and change the subject line to reflect that. Keep subjects short and to the point. Keep the (was: Fast Freddy's Fabulous Flintstonesmobile) parts short as well. If you are on a digest list and don't change the subject line when you reply (which will default to "Re: listname-digest Vxx #xxx"), your message will be trapped by the listserver and will NOT be posted.

  24. Auto-Responders. NEVER use one of these while you are subscribed to the list. It will send an automated reply back to the list for every single message the list sends. Using one of these will result in being BANNED immediately, without any further warning.

Now for MY disclaimer: "I reserve the right to modify or add to these rules at anytime, with or without notice.

You will always be able to find an up-to-date copy of them here. I will also post them to the list occaisonally so new people can see them.
